The temple of Kalabasha was built around 30 BC during August's reign in the early Roman era as a tribute to the lower Nubian sun god Merul, although never finished, Kalabasha Temple is considered one of the best examples of Egyptian architecture in Nubia.

Located approximately 50km south of Aswan at the Gate of Kalabasha on the West Bank of the River Nile, this beautiful temple is over 70 meters long and 22 meters wide, featuring many beautiful and intricate carvings on the walls.

From Kalabasha's sanctuary chambers, a staircase leads up to the roof of the temple where you'll be able to see splendid views of the temple itself as well as the sacred lake it overlooks.

Rich Historical Records Inscribed into the Walls

One such example of these is a long inscription carved by the Roman Governor Aurelius Besarion in AD 250, forbidding pigs in the temple" as well as an inscription of "the Nubian king Silko, carved during the 5th century and recording his victory over the Blemmyes and a picture of him dressed as a Roman soldier on horseback."- Silko was the Christian king of the Nubian kingdom of Nobatia.
